Résumé

This paper shows how J. M. Coetzee uses allegory to deconstruct colonial versions of History. It focuses on his third novel, Waiting for the Barbarians, and analyzes the way the South African writer underscores the differential and structural dimensions of culture which alibiversions of History seek to overshadow. It brings out the novelist's conviction that any human being whom prejudice brands as the Other is in fact a different Self.
