Prevalence of acute malnutrition among children aged 6 to 59 months in the health district of Barouéli

Introduction : In 2009, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) figures the number of people suffering from severe under-nutrition to over a billion. In Mali, according to MICS 2010, moderate acute malnutrition was 18.9% and severe acute malnutrition was 5.3% among children aged 6 to 59 months. In Ségou Region, the level of acute malnutrition was 23.1% for moderate and 6.8% for severe. Materials and Methods : This was a prospective cross-sectional study, was conducted at the District Hospital and Community Health Centres in Barouéli's Health District, from March to December 2010, involving 5860 children aged 6 to 59 months. The objective was to determine the prevalence of acute malnutrition among children 6 to 59 months. Results : We got a global acute malnutrition prevalence of 14%, including 4.4% for severe. The URENI admission was mainly transfers from the URENA with 80.1%, spontaneous admission with 18.7% and relapse with1%. In total 94.9% of patients in the URENI have improved and re-transferred to the URENAS. In the URENAS, 26.9% were cured and 36.5% transferred to the URENAM. In URENAM 66.1% of beneficiaries was cured and 29.8% discontinued treatment.Downloads
