Abstract

The low birth weight (LBW) is an important indicator of infant health because of its relationship to infant mortality and morbidity. We conducted a case control study in the Douentza Health District from January 2015 to December 2016 to study risk factors of low birth weight. For each case of the mother-child couple, a control of the mother- child couple and normal weight child was selected. The data were entered on EpiData 3.1 and analyzed on SPSS 20. Simple and multiple logistic regressions were used for the analysis and Odds to measure the strength of the association. The prevalence of low birth weight (LBW) was 9.2%. In univariate analysis, several variables were associated with low birth weight with OR≥2. In the multivariate analysis, only variables such as low MS (p = 0.005) and HU (p = 0.0001) were associated with FPN.A prospective study was needed to better elucidate the other risk factors and the mechanisms by which the various factors are linked.
