Abstract

Introduction: The partograph is an essential tool for monitoring labor. The objective of this work was to assess the filling quality of the World Health Organization modified partograph in the maternities of the first level health centers of Commune II of Bamako. Material and Methods: We carried out a retrospective descriptive and analytical cross-sectional study over twelve months from March 1, 2018 to February 28, 2019. It concerned all the partographs of parturients and newborns admitted to these centers during the study period. Results: This study concerned 2027 partographs. The partographs filling was carried out by midwives (95.26%), obstetrician nurses (2.92%) and doctors (1.82%). The frequency of correctly filled partographs was 66.93%. There was a relationship between the qualification level of providers and compliance with filling standards (Khi²=37,456; P=0,000). The main filling difficulties concerned uterine contractions (25.7%), examination hours (18.3%) and fetal head modeling (12.5%). Failure to master the new partograph (47.5%) and work overload (29.8%) were the main reasons mentioned. Conclusion: Correctly filled, the partograph contributes to the reduction of maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality. Improving the quality of its filling requires training, awareness and monitoring of providers involved in the care of childbirth.
