Abstract

Introduction: antenatal consultations are one of the priority actions for reducing maternal and neonatal mortality. They help prevent many complications of pregnancy and childbirth. Failure to monitor the pregnancy can therefore constitute a risk factor for these complications. Material and methods: This was a prospective, descriptive cross-sectional study over an 8-month period of women who gave birth without any prior antenatal consultation. The objective was to study the outcome of untreated pregnancies at the Kalaban-Coro referral health center. Results: we recorded 126 cases of unsuccessful pregnancies out of a total of 1,725 deliveries, with a frequency of 7.3%. The 15 to 25 age group was the most represented 56.3%. The majority of patients were illiterate, which is 72.2%; those whose husbands are manual workers accounted for 44.5%. Complications were dominated by severe arterial hypertension, which is 28.6%, followed by hemorrhage during delivery, or 17.6%. The aftermath of childbirth was dominated by anemia at 61.9%. Prematurity was observed in 42.1% of cases. Stillbirths represented 11.1%. Lack of resources was the main reason for not carrying out prenatal consultations that is 56.3%. Conclusion: non-prenatal follow-up runs the risk of complications for both the mother and the fetus. The financial barrier is one of the main reasons.
