Abstract

In the Sikasso region, U5 mortality rate remains high. The implementation of the CHW’ package is a strategy that would bring care closer to people. The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of the CHW’ package interventions on U5 mortality in the Sikasso region from 2014 to 2018. We used LiST to model the impact of two scenarios of the CHW intervention package between 2014 and 2018. The first scenario (1) modeled the impact of the implementation of the CHW intervention package in the Sikasso region between 2014 and 2018. The second scenario (2) modeled the impact of reaching the coverage targets of the CHW’ package interventions programmed in the various strategic ongoing plan in Mali in 2018. Our findings showed that scenario 1 saved more than 7,700 lives of children under 5 in the Sikasso region against greater than 14,800 lives saved by the scenario 2 in 2018. The interventions that saved the most lives in children under 5 years scenario 1 were: Age-appropriate breastfeeding practices (2,244 lives saved), household protection against malaria by ITNs / IDPs (1,538 lives saved), use of ACTs for malaria (1,329 lives saved), the treatment of moderate acute malnutrition, (1,229 lives saved). For scenario 2, the most impacting interventions were: treatment of malaria by ACTs (5,476 lives saved), protection of households against malaria by ITNs / IDPs (2,679 lives saved). The largest reduction was observed in U5 mortality, which rose from 118 ‰ in 2014 to 97 ‰ in 2018 according to the scenario1 and could reach 79 ‰ if the targets of the plans were reached (scenario 2).
