Abstract

Introduction: the death of a large number of children is related to severe acute undernutrition with complication. The creation of centers allows for the management of cases of severe undernutrition in-house. Objective: to analyze data on the management of severe acute malnutrition with complications in children aged 0-59 months in the 13 inpatient nutritional rehabilitation centers in the Kara region 2014 to 2017. Methods: a retrospective review of data on severely malnourished children admitted to the centers in Kara. Data are analyzed according to performance indicators of undernutrition management. Results: With 615 children, the sex ratio was 1.12 in favor of males gender. New admissions represented 97.39% of admissions. Nutritional edema was observed in 64 children (10.40% of admissions). The cure rate, case fatality rate, dropout rate success rate and other rates obtained were 44.89%, 3.67%, 10.06%, 34.66% and 6.72% respectively. Conclusion: The application of the guidelines of the national protocol resulted in the successful cure and treatment of 479 children. Despite the fact that Kara is not in an emergency situation, more work is needed to be done to reduce the case-fatality rate and the drop-out rate.
