Abstract

Introduction: The perception of mothers of children on the target diseases of the expanded vaccination program and on the probable side effects of the antigens is decisive for the complete vaccination of target children. This study will assess the practical knowledge and attitudes of mothers towards signs of illness in children after vaccination.
Material and methods: Our prospective cross-sectional study took place in the Tominian health district from February 3 to 22, 2020. Data collection was carried out with a questionnaire from 150 mothers of target children.
Results: Non-literate mothers represent 58.0%. The initiation of vaccination of all children is observed in 96.67% of mothers. The study reveals that 49.3% of mothers of children did not know any target disease. The majority of mothers of children, 74.0%, did not receive specific information on possible side effects. Signs of illness are observed in children by 53.3% of mothers, among these, 13.8% believe that the situation was serious compared to 86.3% who find the sign less serious, and 52.5% among them practice self-medication to manage signs of illness in children. The majority of mothers, 98.7%, consider it necessary to continue the child's vaccination program regardless of the adverse signs. Informing mothers about the side effects of vaccines improves monitoring of signs of illness in children (P-value=0.0072).
Conclusion: The occurrence of signs of illness in children after routine vaccination does not significantly affect mothers' intention to continue their vaccination programs.
