Neonatal tetanus in the neonatology department of CHU Gabriel Touré

Abstract

Objective : To study epidemiological, clinical aspects and prognosis of neonatal tetanus (TNN) in Gabriel Toure Teaching Hospital. Methods: It was a retrospective and descriptive study conducted for two years. We collected sociodemographic, clinical, therapeutic and outcome data in newborn with tetanus. Thirteen newborns were included. 8 (61.5%) of our mothers were out of school, 6 (46.1%) had not done prenatal care, 6 (46.1%) were not vaccinated against tetanus and were primiparous. The delivery took place at home for 3 mothers (23.1%), the place was indeterminate at 5 (38.5%). The age group 2-7 days was the most represented at admission (61.5%) and concerned 8 patients. The main door was umbilical (84.6%) and involved 11 newborns. The care was done with shea butter in 10 (76, 9%). According to the prognosis score of Dakar, tetanus was considered severe in 7 (53.8%). Lethality was (30.8%) or 3 deaths.
