Abstract

Objective: To study the morbidity and mortality of measles in Bamako during the epidemic from 2009 to 2011. Materials and method: This was a retrospective study carried out from January 2009 to December 2011, ie 3 years. The study took place at two sites, namely the pediatric department of the University Hospital Center (CHU) Gabriel Touré and the Infectious and Tropical Diseases department of the Point "G" CHU. All of the patients hospitalized for measles during the study period at the two sites made up the study population. All records of children under 15 were included in the study. Data were collected and analyzed using SPSS software. Result: We recorded 41 cases of measles out of 115,308 children consulted, ie a frequency of 0.035%. The 9-59 month age group was the most affected (75.60%). The male sex was predominant with a sex ratio of 1.3. The majority of those responsible for the care of our patients were out of school, ie 83%. The Gabriel Touré CHU was the center most in demand for care, ie 78%. More than a third of our patients had not received a measles vaccine (36.60%). Fever and rash were found in all of our patients followed by oculo-respiratory catarrh (92.70%). The majority of patients or 63.40% are cured during this study with 19.50% of deaths. Conclusion: Bronchopneumopathy is the most frequent complication. Early early management could improve patient prognosis.
