Abstract

Introduction: The aim of this study was to evaluate the serological profile of children born to HBsAgpositive
mothers who received seroimmunization at birth. Material and methods: This cross-sectional
study with retrospective and prospective collection from February 2020 to December 2022 in children
aged six months and over born to HBsAg-positive mothers and having received seroimmunization at
birth took place at the Gabriel Touré University Hospital in Bamako. The retrospective phase collected
data on the pregnancy and the child's seroimmunization. In the prospective phase, HBV serological
markers (HBsAg, anti-HBc and anti-HBsAb) were measured in the children. In the presence of total
HBsAg/antiHBc, the child was referred to a paediatrician for follow-up. Data were analyzed using Epi
Info software (version 7.2). The p<0.05 value for Chi2 tests was considered significant. Résults : Out
of 156 children born to HBsAg-positive mothers who had been serovaccinated at birth, 46.1% (n=72)
were able to undergo post-vaccination serological monitoring from six months of age. HBsAg was
positive in 4.2% (n=3) of children. These HBsAg-positive children were born to HBeAg-positive
mothers with a high viral load on treatment, but these children had received seroimmunization 24 h after
birth. The majority of children 86.1% (n=62) had antiHBs levels ≥10IU/ml. Conclusion: Screening
parturients for HBV can considerably reduce the risk of mother-to-child transmission of HBV.
