Abstract

Introduction: Seasonal malaria chemoprevention (SMC) is the cornerstone of malaria prevention in children aged to 3-59 months. Its implementation encounters obstacles such as non-compliance to 2nd and 3rd doses of treatment. Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of noncompliance to the last two doses of treatment and its associated factors. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in November 2022 in the village of Dangassa and the city of Ouelessebougou among consenting parents of children eligible for SMC. Cluster sampling was used to select households and parents. Pearson’s Chi square test was used to compare proportions. Results: The total number of participants was 221, including 100 (45.2%) in Dangassa and 121 (54.8%) in Ouelessebougou. The mean age of participants was 29.6±11.3 years and 54.3% were uneducated. The proportions of noncompliance to the 2nd dose (16% vs. 11.6%) and the 3rd dose (18% vs. 14%) respectively in Dangassa and Ouelessebougou were comparable (p>0.05). Participants’ opinion on SMC and their education level were significantly associated with non-compliance (p<0.05) Conclusion: The proportions of non-compliance to the 2nd and 3rd doses were high in Dangassa and Ouelessebougou. Participants’ opinion on SMC and their education level were the factors associated with non-compliance. Further studies are needed to better understand non-compliance phenomenon.
