Abstract

Purpose of work: The aim of our study was to determine the prevalence of co-infection Streptococcus pneumoniae and HIV / AIDS among children aged 0 to 35 months in Bamako, Mali. Material and Methods: We recruited 173 children in whom blood cultures were performed and HIV testing. The blood culture samples were collected from all children in a sterile and inoculated into blood culture bottles and transported to the laboratory and placed in an automated culture machine called Bactec 9050. All serum/plasma were first subjected to a simple and rapid test with high sensitivity: is DETERMINE, the confirmation and the HIV typing was made by IMMUNOCOMB. Results: Among 173 children, 78 (45.10%) were aged 12 to 23 months, 101 (58.40%) were male, 39 cases (22.54%) were infected with Streptococcus pneumoniae with 134 controls (77.46%) without infection diagnosed. Thus we have detected 9 cases of HIV positivity is 5.20%. Of the 9 children, only 2 cases had co-infection Streptococcus pneumoniae and HIV. Conclusion: Co-infection Streptococcus pneumoniae and HIV is low in our study and a larger size should be performed to confirm our results.
