Abstract

Introduction: Human hepatitis B virus (HBV) is part of the Hepadnaviridae family. It mainly infects humans, but also chimpanzees. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of the hepatitis B virus in the municipalities of Bamako and surrounding areas.


Methodology: The association of young laboratory workers organized screening campaigns in the six communes of the Bamako District and approximately 30 km from Bamako, in Mali. This was a cross-sectional study carried out from October 29 to December 17, 2022. The participants were volunteers of all ages and genders screened on this occasion. Sociodemographic data (age, gender, level of education) were collected through a questionnaire administered to volunteers during an interview, before they were sampled. The First Response ® HBsAg Card, an immunochromatographic test, was used to detect HBs antigens in all samples.


Results: The samples of 521 participants, including 225 men and 286 women, were analyzed. The results showed that 8% of men in the total population (19/235) and 7% of women (19/286) were positive. Overall of the 521 participants, 7.3% were positive. The highest prevalences of HBsAg carriage were respectively found in communes VI, I and IV. No positives were observed in Commune II.


Conclusion: The prevalence of HBsAg still remains high in Mali despite the availability of a protective vaccine. A study on the risk factors for hepatitis B virus infection could be considered to better organize the response
