Abstract

Introduction: the objective is to study the bacteriological profile of chronic suppurative otitis media and propose a treatment regimen based on the sensitivity of the isolated organisms. Material and methods: This was a cross-sectional study over a period of two years, carried out in the Otho-rhino-laryngology and Head and Neck Surgery and Biology departments, of the General Reference Hospital of Niamey and the Zinder National Hospital. An otorrhea swab was taken from any patient with chronic suppurative otitis media after any treatment. Only cases that came back in favor of a bacterial infection were retained. Results: 222 samples were taken and only 100 came back positive, isolating at least one bacteria. A male predominance of 54% was observed. The age group from 0 to 15 years represented 56%. Clinically, otorrhea, found in all patients, was associated with ear pain and hypoacusis in 48% and 26% of cases, respectively. Of the 100 cases positive for bacteriology, 7 mixed cultures with two bacteria were noted. Among the germs found, Staphylococcus aureus was predominant (35.51%) followed by Pseudomonas aeruginosa (28.98%) and Proteus mirabilis (16.82%). These isolated germs were sensitive to imipenem (100%), aminosides (100%) and ciprofloxacin (94.51%). Conclusion: The accessibility of ciprofloxacin, in a precarious socio-economic context, leads us to propose it as first-line treatment in the management of chronic suppurative otitis media in Niger
